What if the earth stood still?

→  July 27th, 2010  →  Kevin blog

An interesting paper (with computer models of the earth) that through computer modeling shows what the earth would look like if it stopped spinning on its axis. Here’s something else I’d like to find: what would the earth look like if there were no oceans?

Kottke: Apollo 11 broadcast, 41 years later

→  July 20th, 2010  →  blog

Jason Kottke created this page last year for the 40th anniversary – presenting it online as it appeared (same exact time coverage started) in 1969. Tres Cool!

Sweet maps app

→  June 18th, 2010  →  Kevin blog

This is something my brother-in-law would love: sketch and other style easy maps for directions for people. Seriously, this is awesome. Going to use this from now on instead of Google Map directions. The search engine giant has some catching up to do, it seems. (This would be a cool thing to do in Google [...]

Subway at new World Trade Center is “moveable feast”

→  June 17th, 2010  →  Current Events Dad Kevin blog

This is pretty neat – and I’m waiting for a comment from my father on this one: Subway has a location that moves up and down on a crane for the men and women working on the new World Trade Center building. Too bad the general public can’t go – the views of New York [...]

Insane underwater diving video

→  June 10th, 2010  →  Current Events Kevin blog

This is insane. Yet, as you can see from this video, this guy free dives down a deep hole without a tank. Can we say this could be in a future Bond film where he fights sharks? I think so.

Star streaming through space

→  May 21st, 2010  →  Kevin astronomy blog

Interesting link I missed the other day: it appears that a star was blown out of nebula somehow and is streaking across space — it can do the distance from the earth to the moon in an hour — and has 90 times more mass than our own sun. Now that is crazy.

Laser Mapping Mayan Ruins

→  May 12th, 2010  →  Kevin blog

Also from Kottke today, an interesting NY Times article about using laser mapping to get a more clear picture of the extent of Mayan ruins. Pretty cool!

Reminds me of childhood dreams of flight

→  May 12th, 2010  →  Kevin Opinion Writing blog

When I was a kid, I had these awesome cars, trucks and military vehicles called Micro Machines. One of those was a small, pocket sized version of the SR-71 Blackbird, a spy plane with such large engines it took another engine just to start it. Also an interesting fact: it could only hold enough fuel [...]

Largest beaver dam in the world

→  May 7th, 2010  →  Kevin blog

Via Kottke, this has got to be one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

Mad Men ending at six seasons

→  April 20th, 2010  →  Kevin Opinion blog

I saw this on Kottke yesterday and didn’t know how to feel. On the one hand, Mad Men is a show that I don’t see lasting forever, and it wouldn’t make sense for it to either. Donald Draper as a character eventually has to have some end. In fact, I don’t know why television producers [...]
