As part of my job, from time to time I am asked to go out and cover Eagle Scout projects. These kids are doing some cool things for the community, from building foot bridges to planting myrtle on Myrtle Hill here in Rome.
Today also marks the 100th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America, whose foundations in America were British in nature after General Robert Baden-Powell founded the scouting movement on the British Isles. (More history is available on the Scouts site.)
I was a Cub Scout, only went to scouts for a while when I was seven or eight years old. But to this day I maintain that it was a good experience while I did it, just like little league baseball and basketball and all the other extra curricular activities I did when I was a child.
And I really agreed with this Wired article about why scouting still matters in America. We need the scouts, and I hope to see more boys earning their Eagle rankings here in Rome.
